Chapter 8: Parking and Stopping
Parallel Parking
Parallel parking is a method of parking a vehicle parallel to the road, in line with other parked vehicles. Here are the general steps:
- Signal your intention and then stop your vehicle alongside the vehicle you intend to park behind.
- Once you’ve stopped, shift into reverse gear.
- As you slowly back up, turn your steering wheel towards the curb.
- Once your front seat aligns with the rear bumper of the vehicle beside you, straighten your wheels and continue to reverse.
- When your vehicle is parallel to the curb, stop and then shift into park.
Angle Parking
Angle parking is a form of parking where vehicles park diagonally to the curb. Here are some tips:
- Signal your intention and approach the parking space slowly.
- Align your vehicle with the parked cars and turn your steering wheel towards the parking space.
- Slowly move into the parking space while checking your mirrors and blind spots.
- Once you’re in the parking space, straighten your wheels and shift into park.
No-Parking Zones
No-parking zones are areas where parking is prohibited. These areas are typically marked with signs or colored curbs. Common no-parking zones include:
- Crosswalks: Parking on or within 6 meters of a crosswalk.
- Sidewalks: Parking on sidewalks or in such a manner that blocks a sidewalk.
- Intersections: Parking within 6 meters of an intersection.
- Stop Signs and Traffic Lights: Parking within 6 meters of a stop sign or traffic light.
- Fire Hydrants: Parking within 5 meters of a fire hydrant.
- No Parking Zones: Parking in areas marked with no parking signs or painted curbs.
- Fire Lanes: Parking in designated fire lanes.
- Railway Crossings: Parking within 15 meters of a railway crossing.
- Bridges and Tunnels: Parking on bridges or in tunnels.
- Bicycle Lanes: Parking in designated bicycle lanes.
- Spaces for People with Disabilities: Parking in a space designated for people with disabilities.
Park parallel to the curb, making sure your car is no more than 30 centimeters (one foot) away from it. When parking on a hill, it's important to turn your wheels to stop the car from rolling into traffic. Here's how to position your wheels:
- Turn wheels to the right when uphill without a curb or downhill with or without a curb.
- Turn wheels to the left when uphill with a curb.
