Chapter 4: Road Markings and Pavement Signs
Lane Markings
Lane markings are used to guide and control traffic. They include:
- Solid White Line: This line separate lanes of traffic moving in the same direction. Crossing a solid white line is generally discouraged as it indicates that changing lanes is unsafe.
- Dashed White Line: This line separate lanes of traffic moving in the same direction. Drivers are allowed to change lanes over these lines when it’s safe to do so.
- Solid Yellow Line: This line separate traffic moving in opposite directions. Crossing a solid yellow line to pass another vehicle is allowed only with extreme caution.
- Double solid Yellow line: This line separates traffic moving in opposite directions. Crossing is not allowed in either direction; stay in your lane and do not pass.
- Dashed Yellow line: This line separates traffic moving in opposite directions. Crossing to pass another vehicle is permitted, but only with extreme caution.
- Broken line and solid line: A broken line next to a solid line means you are allowed to pass, but only when the broken line is on your side and it is safe to do so.
- Double broken yellow line: This lane is reversible. Follow the lane control signal for usage. Check the lane control signal to know if you are allowed to use it.
- Two-way left-turn lane: A two-way left-turn lane allows drivers from both directions to use the same lane for left turns.
Pedestrian Crossings
Pedestrian Crossings, also known as crosswalks, are marked with white parallel lines across the road. They indicate areas where pedestrians have the right of way and where drivers should stop if pedestrians are present.
Stop Lines
Stop lines are solid white lines that indicate where drivers must stop when approaching intersections or stop signs.
Arrows
Arrows painted on the road indicate the direction in which you should be moving in that lane.
- Straight Arrow: Go straight, typically in forward-only lanes.
- Left Arrow: Turn left, usually in left-turn lanes.
- Right Arrow: Turn right, generally in right-turn lanes.
- Straight and Left/Right Arrow: Go straight or turn either left or right. These arrows are used often in lanes allowing both.
Bicycle Lanes
Bicycle lanes are marked with a symbol of a bicycle and are reserved for cyclists. Motor vehicles are generally not allowed to drive or park in these lanes.
Reserved Lanes
A reserved lane is designated for specific types of vehicles, such as buses, bicycles, or high occupancy vehicles (HOVs). Other vehicles are generally not allowed to use these lanes. Additional signs or pavement markings will clearly indicate which vehicles are allowed to use the lane.
